I am trying to find new ways to get our canine companions who has special needs more of a chance to be recognized and hopefully find their forever home. I am attaching a word doc of one of our canine companions to see if this format is good and if you could add to your wonderful website for us. If it is, I have 2 more special companions with other needs that our organization is fostering currently. If homes can be found, it opens up slots to save more companions in our area which only has shelters that kill (Tulare County California). Our organization is one of few here and we are a no-kill regardless of how long the companions stay with us.

I am fostering a Pit/Boxer mix and have been unable to place him because of his injury. I found him two months ago left to die in his owners yard. The man told me he had been hit by a car but that he had no $ for a vet. Even when offered to pay, he had no interest in helping Bruce. I adopted him from him on the spot and raced him to a vet. The left leg was seriously shattered and had gone untreated, said the vet, for at least 3 weeks! The delay in treatment made the injury much harder to repair, so an Orthopedic surgeon was called in. I spent over $3000 on a surgery that took two vets over three hours to complete. His bones were pieced back together and plates were attached.

Two months later, it appears the leg is not healing. At some point it may require another major surgery or amputation. I got a 3rd vet's opinion which is leave the leg alone since it is not infected and there is still a chance at healing....we won't know for sure if there will be any more surgery until another xray in 2 months...and he does not seem to be in pain
He is a nurturing, loving dog. He needs lot of exercise and is young and athletic, 55 pounds. He would be best in a home without small animals, since he chases them. He does great with kids and bigger dogs and all people. Hi is a wonderful boy, but all of this crating and pain with the leg have been frustrating for him.
I am in Santa Fe, NM. I got a 3rd vet's opinion which is leave the leg alone since it is not infected and there is still a chance at healing....we won't know for sure if there will be any more surgery until another xray in 2 months...and he does not seem to be in pain

Jackson ! Brimming with energy, Jackson is a happy guy, and loves to race around the yard, roll in the grass, play fetch, and just lay by your feet while he chomps on his bone. He's alert, inquisitive, and loves to explore. Jackson is a normal loving in Lab in everyway but one. Jackson was hit by a car and turned into LR when the accident resulted in a broken tail which caused nerve damage. LR provided the necessary surgery he needed to remove the tail but it left Jackson with nerve damage causing incontinence.

Jackson is used to wearing a diaper and is gaining some control and we are hoping more comes back soon. He would be a great dog for a family who has a pond or pool and who would like a dog to be outside. He is a great watch dog, is good with other dogs, and loves kids. We feel Jackson has earned a spot with a family...we just need to find one for him...could that be you! Please consider Jackson.

TEXAS. My Dad passed away May 20th. His 10 year old retriever takes insulin twice a day and is on WD Science Diet dog food and Arthritis medicine. Is there any rescue organization in Texas that would take her? She has been a wonderful dog, but unfortunately my dog is almost 15, deaf and almost blind. My dads dog loves all people and children , but is very protective and doesn't like another dog around. I don't want to put this sweet dog down. Please help me find her a home.
Thanks so much, Susan Chazanow thesusu@tx.rr.com

Dudley is a 2-3 year old Golden Retriever male that had been hit by a car, breaking his pelvis. The pelvis broke in an area that had negative impact on the nerves that tell his brain when to urinate. Dudley has been in the rescue's care for over three months at a vet's office to allow time for "healing" of the nerves. Some progress was made, but he still could not completely empty his bladder. Therefore, for three months at the vet he had to be catheterized twice a day to empty his bladder completely.

Dudley had surgery to insert a systostomy tube, which we hoped would allow him to get out of a vet's office and into a foster home. His surgery was on 4/13. This tube would allow for a foster or perm home to draw the urine out via a syringe. However, two weeks after surgery it appears that Dudley is incontinent. He doesn't know he isn't well. He loves to play, loves other dogs, cats and of course people. He is a happy go lucky and goofy pup. Dudley will need a special home to help him with his needs. If you are interested in Dudley, please contact the Cape Fear Golden Retriever Rescue in Wilmington, NC at 910-791-5001 or by emailing cfgrr@hotmail.com.

We at Miracles At Work, a non-profit dog rescue and adoption group, in Greensboro, NC, have a very special Shepherd. His name is Levi, and Gail Gentry our founder, has kept him alive despite the veterinarians diagnosis for the past 8 months when he was diagnosed with mega esophagus. He is the same size as now as his other male siblings; she has been blending his food and feeding him separately from the other rescues.
It is now time for him to move on to a special home, one that is equipped and ready to take him on full time with his special needs. Due to our continued efforts to take in rescues and place them in forever homes, we realize we need to place him with someone else that can continue to take care of his special diet away from other dogs. We have been unable to find that special home for him to continue on to, and have had a suggestion from another member of a local rescue group that you may have some connections to place this wonderful dog.
His birthday is 4-22-2009, so he is almost a year old now. Except for the special diet and strict feeding needs, he has no other disablities and is robust and normal.  We would love to find a forever home for this beautiful, wonderful dog!
Please feel free to contact Gail either on her cell phone 336-708-0343 or at her business (just say you are calling about Levi) 336-294-2833.  Karen Long klong2556@yahoo.com

Little Arrow is a 4 yr old, male, blind Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix, who was surrendered to our shelter by his owner due to “having accidents” in the house.
Our medical staff soon found out that his increased urination was caused by untreated diabetes. We have since been trying to get him regulated with 2 insulin injections a day. However, the shelter facility is a highly stressful environment for this little guy. He is a very sweet boy that is trying hard to adjust to his situation, but he really needs a stable home and one-on-one love and TLC. He has some insecurities due to the fact that his previous owner “punished” him for accidents in the house.
Please help us find a loving home for this sweet little guy. He does well with other mellow dogs and has no interest in cats.

Harley is a 5 year old, 60 lb, male Catahoula who is looking for a loving family to call his own. He hopes that his congenital vision and hearing impairment will not stop anyone from considering adopting him. He is able to see light/dark contrast out of his left eye and has unilateral hearing, able to hear sounds but having difficulty in locating the source of the sound. Despite these limitations Harley displays confidence and gets around amazingly well. He is very smart and learned to navigate the house and yard within 2 days of staying with his foster family. He can find the water bowl, knows when to step up onto the patio, and can even locate the doggie door to go in and out. Harley rides well in the car and enjoys going for walks. He is gentle and has liked every person he has met. He gets along with some dogs but has not been around children or cats. Harley is housetrained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and on heartworm prevention. This charming and handsome guy would love to be your friend!

Harley is currently living in a foster home in Arizona. He is adoptable through Catahoula Rescue, Inc. The website is www.catahoularescue.com. If you are interested in Harley, please contact Bambi at bambiw4@yahoo.com.

Bullwinkle is an 8 month old purebred english bulldog with spina bifida.
He was found as a stray in the city of Chicago and we picked him up and he has been in foster for almost three months. He has bowel and bladder incontinence that will never improve.
Bullwinkle is a wonderful, sweet, playful and smart bulldog who doesn't know he has anything wrong with him. He loves all people and all animals. He loves baths and playtime and he runs like the wind. He is a joy to walk on the leash and can learn tricks quickly- he aims to please.
We are looking for a special home for Bullwinkle that can handle his incontinence by utilizing re-useable diapers with suspenders. He is on a regular diet and the only medication he takes is Proin which helps his bladder incontinence.
In every other way he is a perfectly normal- and healthy- bulldog. All of the volunteers at IEBR love him like our very own and we are holding out for a special home for him.

I am currently fostering a six month old English Bulldog named Belly. Belly is the sweetest little girl in the world, but she was born incontinent. Because of overcrowding in her mother's womb, her lower vertebrae's were somehow pinched and she cannot feel the muscles surrounding her bladder or bowels.
We rescued her from being euthanized when she was eight weeks old and have been trying to find her a home ever since. Unfortunately, because of her medical condition, this has proved nearly impossible. Neither can we keep her. Although my husband and I have grown very attached to her, we already have two dogs, five cats, two bunnies, and a baby on the way.
We contacted the local bulldog rescue a couple of months ago for help placing her, but their advice was for us to put her down. I simply cannot let that happen. We are desperate to find her a home. Please, please, please can you help us? Belly deserves a good life and I know that somewhere out there someone is willing to provide that life for her; I just need help finding them.

Angel was rescued from euthanize only days ago. Angel is just that, a pure, innocent and loving Angel. She is severely malnourished, emaciated, a walking skeleton . She has obviously been abused but her heart swells with love; she shares nothing but love for all. After being thoroughly checked out by a vet, she was diagnosed with diabetes, and she has had it for a very long time. Dogs with diabetes usually show loss of a few pounds, but Angel is likely 30 plus pounds underweight… The real miracle is that she is NOT suffering with any organ damage, her renal and liver function are good, she does not have cataracts. Angel is an otherwise healthy 5-6 year old dog.
Angel has a long road of recovery ahead of her, she will have good days and bad days, as she struggles to regain her strength, and her body adjusts to the nourishment she now receives. It took a very long time for her to waste away, and it will take a very long time for her to recover. But Angel, despite all the odds being stacked against her, has an amazing will to live and the miraculous body that has survived the most severe a case of starvation we have ever seen, not to mention the fact that her organs are not damaged from the long term effects of untreated diabetes.

Cookie was dumped by his owner at a high kill and overcrowded shelter. She didn't have enough time to take care of Cookie anymore. Cookie was scheduled to be put to sleep after staying at the shelter for more than 2 months. We rescued him just in time.
He is a very fragile little Chihuahua boy. He is very quiet and loves snuggling with his foster mum. Cookie's best spot is sitting on his foster mum's lap. He barely makes any noise at home but once he goes for a walk outside he becomes a very different doggy. His gait is amazing. He walks very well on a leash, doesn't pull and walks just like a gentleman. Due to the stress and lack of warm companionship at the shelter, Cookie is looking for a loving forever family that can help him overcome his fear of loud noises and quick movements.
He is trained to go outside for potty breaks. Cookie was very malnourished when he was rescued from the shelter, but he is slowly gaining a healthy weight. He is estimated to be about 5 years old and now weighs 7 pounds.
We had a complete blood test done when we pulled him from the shelter. The blood test results showed that Cookie's kidney only functioned 35%~40%. Our vet's opinion was that he might have had a urinary stone removal surgery while he was living with his original owner. If a dog's bladder is somewhat damaged, the kidney's function can quickly decrease.
Cookie was strictly fed a special prescription diet for his kidney for the past 2 months. We are conducting a full blood panel test every month. His most current tests showed that his kidneys have FULLY recovered. It is important for his forever family to go on regular daily walks to maintain his health so that Cookie can live a long and healthy life.
Please consider adopting Cookie. He has the most beautiful black eyes and can give you unconditional love to your family.
Cookie is neutered, microchipped, vet checked, and are up to date on all vaccinations.
If you are interested in adopting Cookie, please email us at info@happyendingrescue.org  Stephanie Jeong www.HappyEndingRescue.org

Sugar Ray is an 8 yr. old male, Boxer who is very loving and wants to be with people all the time. He suffers from neurological problems which limits the movement of his rear limbs and makes walking difficult for him. He would benefit from a doggie cart, which we are currently trying to obtain for him. Sugar Ray seems to love children but is uncomfortable around some other dogs. Sugar Ray is currently at Kootenai Humane Society, in Hayden ID. More information can be obtained at behavior@kootenaihumanesociety.com

Nyla is a special puppy who has a big heart and has no idea she is medically special. When Nyla first came to
Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida she had just been diagnosed with Neospora. Her physical condition left her with absolutely no control of her hind limbs. LRROF has been working on flexibility in both her hips and hind limbs and a great improvement has been seen. Amazing progression by such a determined little pup. Time has moved on and Nyla has been in rescue 5 or her 7 months. "Special Needs" does not apply to her anymore. She may look a little different physically, but she is absolutely no different than any other loving, playful puppy. Her only challenge is going  UP an entire flight of stairs. Nyla can come down on her own and she has absolutely no problem with small steps. She is completely independent and requires no assistance to function like a normal puppy. Nyla can swim, run and play. She will play fetch with anything you are willing to throw for her. She has been recently named the "lap lab" as she is smaller than a pocket lab(about 35 lbs.) and fits perfectly on your lap(and will remain there until you physically force her to leave :)) She has been around children and infants and has done great with everyone. Nyla is also cat tested and passed with flying colors. Nyla likes to run and play but truly she is a VERY mellow lab and would do just fine with a family in a condo or town home where space for a large lab might be limited. Her only requirement is continuous love.
Nyla is house trained, crate trained and knows basic commands. She has an amazing disposition and joy of life. At 7 months Nyla still has puppy play, but she is not a chewer and is also out of the very early puppy phase behaviors. Nyla is one of the sweetest labs we have ever had the opportunity to meet, learn from and love. Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida would be more than happy to answer any and all questions about her and we welcome the opportunity to do so.
Nyla's youtube videos have also been updated and can be found here: Http://www.youtube.com/user/Nyla2TheBone
If you are interested in meeting or adopting NYLA or one of our other labs contact Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida by visiting our website www.labradorrescue.net  or call 1-866-464-LABS or email ehoeft@lrrof.org
LRROF has all our Labs microchipped, spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and each adoption comes with a 30 day pre-paid pet health insurance plan. All applicants will have a home inspection and vet reference (if applicable).

Precious is 3 years old wonderful and kind girl pit bull. She has diabetes and currently needs IV fluids twice a day. The vet thinks that with time; she can be regulated and will not need insulin and IV fluids.
If you like to meet Precious; please contact Marianna at 916-508-9418 or email:mariannagilshteyn2005@yahoo.com
She will need to know that there are kind people in the world who will not starve her!
Alternatively, you can foster her and make a decision whether Precious fits in your family. Our rescue will pay all vet bills and provide food.
Precious was rescued from high-kill shelter on 6/15/2005.
She is VERY emaciated, a seizure from owner now released for rescue. A very nice girl who did not deserve to be treated like this. She is very friendly with people and dogs ; big and small. As of now, we do not know how she is with cats and children. At this time, we are unable to say if she is house-trained as she is being kenneled at the vet.
She is waiting for her forever home where she will be given love, affection, and respect!

On June 12, 2009 I was headed out to work when I spotted a puppy under my vehicle. I went to pick him up he never made a sound but his little tail was wagging with joy.
I took him inside to get some water. The temperature that day with heat index was 94. I soon realized that this puppy was placed here by someone. He was cripple and couldn’t walk or stand. This is when he got the name Christian.
I took him to the Vet on Saturday morning. The Vet said one of the legs appear to have been broken 4 times. The plan was to take him back on Monday for xrays.
I Knew he was going to need a specialist. I made phone calls and sent out emails. I was told about a specialist in Cary, N.C. at PetSound Animal Hospital a Dr. Monce. I contacted them and took Christian in on Monday morning. Dr. Monce did exrays. What I am about to tell you is heart breaking. Christian had 4 broken legs with 14 fractures. He will have to undergo surgery. Some of the fractures will have to be broken and reset. The first surgery will be Tuesday June 16 on the right back leg and on Thursday surgery on the left front and back leg. Well the right front we don’t know how that will be. It might have to be amputated. Lets put out a lot of prays for this little one.
I am attaching also pictures of Christian. He is a Terrier and so sweet to have endured all the pain he has in the 10 -12 weeks of his life.
This is what a person did and couldn’t even bring him up to the house just left him in the heat on rocks. Please lets get Christian able to walk so we can show him off in the town where we live.
We are in need of donations for Christian’s surgery. You can send a donation to PetSound Animal Hospital in Cary, N.C. where Christian is being treated. He will remain in the hospital until he is able to walk again. We also have paypal on our website www.sandhillbeagles.com. We are a 501C3 nonprofit. SandHill Beagles Rescue

Tyner is a golden retriever who was rescued by Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue in Raleigh, NC.
http://www.goldenrescuenc.org/images/tyner3_000.jpg  In December 2008, we brought into our program a wonderful 4 year old golden that had been left at a local shelter. We named him “Tyner”. After much testing, he was diagnosed with Megaesophagus. In the 7 months he has been in our program, several fosters have cared for him. He is a sweet, happy dog and in other ways makes a wonderful pet, but ME requires feeding in a vertical position to minimize regurgitation. Tyner cooperates well with being fed vertically and we have managed to stop his weight lose but he remains extremely skinny and continues to regurgitate fairly often – many times just saliva or water, but a mess, nonetheless. He gets along with other dogs, loves people, but shouldn't be in a home with cats.

I have a 10 month old spayed pit bull who was born without any front paws. I was asked by a friend of mine who rescued her from the breeder if I could try to find a home for her. He lived in an apartment and couldn't care for her their. I have since taken her in but I need to find a home for her. When we listed her on the web sites, people with not very good intentions for her called. I really need help finding her a home. I have 3 small dogs and two cats and she loves all of them. I also have a 6, 13 & 15 year old and she loves all of them. She is very friendly and doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. I would love to keep her but I will be having surgery on my back in the next couple of months due to 2 herniated discs.

Cody was a stray picked up by Animal Control. He has had a horrible start in life. He had been shot in the leg, and loaded with parasites when I got him. Cody was scared of everyone and everything. I took him to the vet, then to my house to heal.

I got him cleared of the parasites, and the leg healed, but that is when I realized Cody is incontinent. I took him to the vet again, and x-rays revealed Cody had at some time also been shot in his right hind quarter. Cody has a large piece of shot in him, and there are a lot of bone fragments floating around. His spine was severed, as was his tail. He will never regain control over his bowls, or his urine. The vet could not believe he could even walk, but he shows no effects in his getting around, walking, or running. I have cried all weekend at the thought of having to put this guy down.

He is young, about one and a half, and is now LOVING life. He is having a ball with my 6 dogs, and gets so excited when we go to pet him, he just cant get enough. Cody is in no pain. I work two jobs, and my husband three. We simply do not have the time to care for Cody as he needs. He will need to have his back side washed frequently throughout the day, and a cream put on to keep the flies away, or kept inside in diapers.

I am not home enough to do either. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I know there is someone out there who has the time to spend with this wonderful boy! I can not keep him going on for long, because I am so afraid of flies laying eggs and him getting maggots. PLEASE POST THIS EVERYWHERE!!! You just cant believe what a great guy this is, with so much love to give. Thank you and God Bless...   Elanna Bradley / Chester animal Control / 618-615-2664

My name is Carla and I am in St Petersburg Florida.
We have a client at the animal hospital where I work that breeds Catahoulas selling for the financial aspect. He had a litter of 9 puppies and all were fine with the exception of one little male.
This little guy is the most beautiful white/merle you have ever seen.
Now I'm sure with what I just told  you, you probably already know the problem. This little dog is mostly blind and deaf.
Today he decided that he "wasn't worth the hassle" and now that he is 6 months old, brought him in to be euthanized. I talked him into surrendering him over to me.
There is no way I can keep this little guy because I already have 4 dogs and 2 cats.
I am positive that he can see some things. He has no trouble finding me in the yard and changes in light he notices.
He is current on all his shots but does need to be neutered.
He has a very sweet nature and wants to be close to you. Right now he is laying at me feet. Please help, me find a special person to take this special little pup.  Carla Quilliam <seekayque@yahoo.com

We have a hound mix, Bowie, who is rather young but has very badly crippled front legs, at the Fairfield Area Humane Society in Lancaster Ohio. We recently rescued a Catahoula Leopard mix named "Road Dog" from a homeless man in NYC. We had him treated at the Animal Medical Center immediately because he had a severe wound that had not been properly treated for 2 years. One of his front legs was amputated. He is doing great now -- all healed up and a happy & handsome boy! He is being fostered between us and my boyfriend's mother who lives in Clinton, CT until we find a loving & appropriate home for him. We cannot keep him due to the fact that we aren't allowed pets and NYC is not an ideal place for him to be. Grandma is elderly and cannot give him appropriate attention and time. He loves the quiet and vast surroundings of CT. He simply needs a companion who will give him a lot of love and take him for a few walks every day! He is low maintenance. However, he doesn't like dogs, so he needs to be in a home without pets. He is loving, smart, well-trained (although he exhibits some aggression towards dogs on a walk-but this can definitely be worked on!). He loves people! He is 6 years old, healthy, and neutered, etc. All of Road Dog's medical costs have been taken care of by us and by generous donations. This dog was well worth rescuing and we are looking for a loving person who will feel the same way and keep him for the rest of his life.  Emma emmajupiter@yahoo.com

JASMINE
Meet our sweet girl, Jasmine! She is a purebred Australian Shepherd who is going to need a special family to call her own. You see, Jasmine is the product of irresponsible merle to merle breeding that often produces offspring that are blind or deaf. Poor Jasmine is both.
Jasmine is a Morgan County Humane Society foster home where she is doing quite well. Here's what her foster mom has to say about this sweetie:
"Jasmine is a very happy girl. It is hard to get a good picture of her as she is always on the move! Australian Shepherds are working dogs so she will need some room to exercise. She was unfamiliar with being on a leash so we are working with her on that and getting her used to the harness! She had been around children in the past and her temperment is good." Jasmine is 23 lbs and has been spayed and currently on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. She is approximately 3 - 4 years old. Jasmine is currently being fostered in Mooresville, IN. Please call 317-371-5846 to learn more about her or email mareseatoats7001@sbcglobal.net

JonJon, or JJ, is a very sweet 3 1/2-year old, medium-sized, (about 50 lbs) Labrador Retriever-Hound mix, neutered male. He is a great house dog with excellent house manners. He is eager to please, well behaved, house and crate-trained. He knows how to sit, come, lay down and ‘wait’. JJ is wonderful and gentle with children of all ages, especially with small children three years old or older. He is in excellent physical condition and should have daily exercise. He loves playing fetch, chasing and catching balls, retrieving Frisbees, and playing tug of war with you, or with another dog. Jon Jon loves to play in water--pools, sprinklers, etc. He gets along well with other nice dogs, in fact would love an active dog companion. He is also gentle and considerate with an older dog. He is not recommended for a home with cats. JJ is a Special Needs dog; his condition is analogous to OCD in humans. He sometimes feels compelled to chase moving objects such as small animals, cars, bikes, and birds. This tendency is aggravated by stress, and may cause him to become frustrated and excited. He has been on Clomitramine medication in the past, but previous fosters found out that he appeared worse when on it. He has been successfully off medication since December 2008. Exercise,
playtime, and lots human interaction are positive and key factors for Jon Jon. He desperately needs someone special with a big heart to love him, patience to understand him, and commitment to care for him for the rest of his life. He will repay you with a love that is beyond words. Jon Jon would thrive with someone who had fenced acreage where he can run and play with other dogs or, because he loves water so much, perhaps someone with access to a lake, pond, or a swimming pool for him. He has been in and out of homes too much and needs a family that will commit to him for the rest of his life. As of this writing (April 2009) Jon Jon is being boarded and his condition will exacerbate and we fear he will deteriorate quickly without a family. We are desperate to find him a foster or permanent home.

The adoption contact person for Jon Jon is Linda Ainsworth at   jlainsw@msn.com  or 505-275-7414. Linda is willing to bring Jon
Jon to a committed and approved adopter even out of State. Alternate e-mail and phone numbers are pbolnick@aol.com 505-301-7344 or this e-mail address.
